Ball mastery
Ball mastery is comfort — the ball doing what the player intends, without a glance down at it.
Ball mastery is the ball answering to you: toe taps, sole rolls, cuts and turns off both feet, repeated until touch is automatic and the eyes are free to watch the game. It's built on volume — thousands of touches — which is exactly why it dies in drill lines. One ball per kid plus a game worth caring about is the whole formula, and this is the one skill on the list a player can genuinely build alone against a garage door.
Coach Says is the littlest kids' version: Simon Says with a ball at every foot turns toe taps and sole rolls into a listening game, and U4–U6 players will grind out fifty quality repetitions without ever noticing the work. Dribbling Gates then makes the touches useful — every gate demands a turn, a change of direction, and ideally the other foot. The cue that pays off for years: "a gate on your left shouldn't need a loop so you can take it right-footed." From U10 up, add speed until the touch breaks down, then back off one notch — that edge is exactly where mastery grows.
For parents, this is the skill to send home. Follow the Leader in the backyard, ten toe taps during every TV commercial, sole rolls while brushing teeth — silly, tiny, and daily beats long and weekly every single time. A kid who owns the ball at home walks onto the field with a swagger no practice plan can hand them.
