Dribbling

Moving with the ball at your feet is most of the game at this age — which is why more of our games build dribbling than anything else.

Dribbling is carrying the ball with quick, small touches while your head comes up between them. For young players it comes before everything else: nobody can pass, shoot, or make a decision until the ball is under control at moving feet. That's why the classic youth games are all secretly dribbling games — a minnow weaving away from a shark is learning close control under real pressure, no cones-in-a-line required.

What to expect changes fast with age. At U4–U6, the wins are bravery and giggles: every kid needs their own ball, and your job is maximizing touches, not polishing technique — Hit the Coach and Pirate's Treasure sneak in hundreds of touches while the kids think they're just playing. By U7–U9 you can start asking for eyes up between touches and for both feet. From U10 up, dribbling gets a purpose: beat your defender in Get Outta Here, or carry the ball out of pressure in the Four-Goal Game.

Three cues cover almost every dribbling moment, and they're short enough to shout across a field: "little touches" when the ball keeps running away, "eyes up" when a player is staring at their shoelaces, and "change gears" when they dribble at one speed all round. Say the cue, then let the game do the coaching — a shark closing in teaches a sharper lesson about close control than any lecture will.
