Games for 7–9 year olds

Tag, freeze tag, red light green light, marbles — you’ve played them all at recess. Every game here takes one of those and adds a soccer ball, which makes it about ten times better. And now you’re the one who knows the rules: read the steps once, teach your friends in a minute, and start playing before anybody gets bored. If an argument breaks out over whether somebody’s ball was really frozen, that’s what a do-over is for.

Start with the top group — your crew can run those with zero grown-ups, start to finish. The bottom group is what your coach might run at practice; know a game before practice does and you’ll look like a wizard. Either way, the field is yours to build: two shoes make a goal, water bottles make gates, and the kid who sets it all up gets first pick of teams. That’s the rule. You just made it.
